Educating Children

Worcestershire County Council currently delivers the following programmes within schools to educate pupils about road safety issues:

Speed Awareness Training

This exercise, designed for years five and six, aims to make children aware of the relationship between speed and distance and how this effects the time it takes for a vehicle to stop The children watch a DVD before participating in practical exercises on the road, which includes measuring a 50 metre distance and timing vehicles passing over this with a stopwatch to reveal the speed of the vehicle. The children also receive a work pack that they can complete during future sessions in the classroom.

Pre-driver training

Delivered at Baxter's College, Kidderminster and Stourport and Bewdley High Schools, this initiative involves taking groups of young drivers to Throckmorton Airdome at Pershore. Professional driving instructors, including representatives from West Mercia Constabulary and Anglo American Racing, teach the pupils driving skills in an attempt to reduce the high number of fatalities within this group. Due to the success of this initiative, more courses are planned for September and October 2008.

Although alternative methods of transport such as walking, cycling and passenger transport are becoming more popular, there are times when the car is the most practical option for your journey.
