Nature Reserves

We work in partnership with Worcestershire Wildlife Trust to manage two local nature reserves in the area.

Broadway Gravel Pit

The local nature reserve is sited to the west of Broadway on an area previously used for gravel extraction until 1957.

It now contains a variety of semi-natural habitats ranging from seasonal open water, to marsh and dry areas of grassland with scrub.  The diversity of habitats has resulted in a great range of species being present on the site.  Over 100 species of flowering plants have been recorded as well as many bird, mammal and invertebrate species, some of which are only found in wetland habitats such as this site supports.

Droitwich Community Woodland

Lies to the west of Droitwich Spa, bisected by the Droitwich by-pass (A38) Roman Way, the River Salwarpe and the Droitwich Canal.  The woodland is dominated by plantings of oak, alder and bird cherry; there is a zone of unimproved grassland containing clusters of anthills bordering gorse bramble scrubland.

The woodland is home to a number of invertebrates, and there is also an exciting range of fauna to complement the flora, these include colonies of marbled white, painted lady and comma butterflies.  The combination of scrub, grassland and coppice provide an ideal habitat for breeding birds.

There is a waymarked trail starting off Ombersley Way, about 100 metres south of the Roman Way.  Sensible shoes are required and the present trail is not suitable for wheelchair use.  Allow 1 hour to walk it.
