The Economic Strategy and Regeneration Unit is responsible for co-ordinating the Shell LiveWIRE business support programme for the 16 to 30 year old age group in both Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
Shell LiveWIRE has helped thousands of people under 30 to start and develop their own business with a comprehensive range of free information, advice and support. Shell LiveWIRE also organise the 'Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the Year' competition - details of which can be found on their website.

WHO DO YOU HAVE TO TELL WHEN YOU START A BUSINESS?
Depending on where you start your business and what type of business it is, you may need planning permission and or to comply with building regulations and you should contact the planning department of your district council to discuss this aspect of your business.
If starting the business from home you should contact your mortgage lender, landlord, and/or freeholder to see if there are any reasons why you cannot base your business at home.

You should register your business with the Health and Safety Executive or your local authorities Environmental Health Department to comply with legislation.

When you start your business you will probably have to pay business rates for your premises - sometimes even if you work from home. If you are unsure contact the local branch of the Valuation Office Agency for advice. T. 020 7506 1700 for details of your local office or visit www.voa.gov.uk
You must notify the local council covering the intended workplace where you are going to start a business and register for business rates if appropriate.

Businesses must register for VAT if they exceed the registration threshold.

Register with the Inland Revenue as self-employed even if you already send in a tax return. There are some exceptions and you should visit your local Inland Revenue office or contact the Self Assessment Order line on 0845 9000 404 to obtain leaflet IR56 which will help you to decide.
You should register within the first 3 full months of self-employment by calling the help line for the newly self-employed on 0845 15 45 15. Alternatively you can complete and return form CWF1 which, you can obtain by visiting your local Inland Revenue Office or by visiting the Inland Revenue website at www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/startingup. The Inland Revenue also offer a guide for people starting a business, form P/SE/1 which is also available from their website.
