Overview of the scheme ……

The intentions of the refurbishment scheme are to:

  • relocate the services currently in the footway to the underside of the bridge
  • remove the surfacing and the granular fill between the structural elements to permit the application of a protective coating and the casting of a new reinforced concrete slab
  • provide a waterproofing membrane to prevent the ingress of water into the structure which has previously caused the unsightly staining to paint finish
  • repair and replace defective decorative castings
  • install heritage style cast iron kerbing to protect pedestrians and prevent vehicles impacting on the decorative parapet fencing
  • resurface the carriageway from the junction with the sports centre through to the junction with York Street, High Street, and New Street
  • paint the entire structure to include the spiral staircase, lighting columns and parapets.

Traffic management…………

In order to undertake the work it is necessary to restrict the carriageway over the bridge to one lane.

Traffic will be managed by a controller normally present at junctions with permanent traffic signals. This will allow the flexibility to manage the tidal traffic flows that exist eastbound in the morning and westbound in the evening. The aspiration is to try and  keep Stourport running as near normal as is possible during the works.

There will be a total weekend closure from the 3rd - 5th August 2007 to allow the resurfacing work to be undertaken.

Emergency Service vehicles will be allowed full access through the works at all times.

In order to relieve the town of unnecessary traffic during the essential works signing will be in place to encourage drivers on through-journeys to choose alternative routes.

Greater enforcement of parking will also be made by West Mercia Police to keep the towns traffic flowing smoothly.

Business as usual in Stourport throughout the works
