Accident Studies

Each year in Worcestershire there are around 1,500 personal injury road traffic accidents. These accidents result in some 2,000 casualties. By clicking the link to our online mapping system you can zoom in to the place you are interested in, to find information about the collisions.

The system displays details of the latest 36-months data, and is updated on a monthly basis.

You should note that data is always about six-weeks behind the current date.

West Mercia Constabulary provides the accident information to the County on a monthly basis.

The Accident Studies Team are continually working towards the National Targets of:

40% reduction in the number of ALL people killed or seriously injured (KSI) in road accidents.
50% reduction in the number of CHILDREN killed or seriously injured (KSI) in road accidents.

Children are defined as being those aged under 16.

10% reduction in the slight casualty rate, expressed as the number of people slightly injured per 100 million vehicle kilometres.

More information on the National Targets can be found on:'Tomorrow's Roads - Safer for Everyone'

Definition of a Road Traffic Accident (as defined by Department Of Transport):

"Involves personal injury occurring on the public highway (including footways) in which at least one road vehicle or a vehicle in collision with a pedestrian is involved and which becomes known to the police within 30 days of its occurrence. This definition includes collisions involving non-motor vehicles such as pedal cycles and ridden horses on public roads. The vehicle need not be moving and accidents involving stationary vehicles and pedestrians or users are included. One accident may give rise to several casualties."

The team are continually monitoring the accident picture across the County and use the accident data to establish where there are casualty problems occurring on the Countys’ road network.

We are then able to undertake a study of accident locations, accident circumstances and the types of road users and vehicles involved.

Having determined the areas of concern, sites are then prioritised for further investigation and remedial schemes will be drawn up and costed out. The most cost effective schemes will then be forwarded to the local safety schemes programme.

Engineering measures alone will not always be the complete remedy to accident problems and there will be a need to use enforcement, education, training and publicity alongside low-cost engineering measures. The following link will take you through to the Road Safety Web page.
