The future of your Library Service

Worcestershire County Council is urging all residents to get involved in the consultation about the review of its the Library Service. One of the ways residents can have their say on the library review is to fill in the online survey.

Cllr Philip Gretton, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, said: "There’s already been a great deal of interest in the proposals that we’ve put forward as a result of the consultants’ report on the Library Service. The initial feedback that we’ve had confirms what we already knew; that our libraries are greatly valued and play a huge part in the community."

"What we now want to see is people reading the report to see what’s on the table and feed back more views to us. The report also outlines how our excellent Library Service at Home overlaps with the equally excellent Mobile Library Service, so there are opportunities to cut out some of the duplications."

"It’s an excellent report that demonstrates what a great Library Service we have and how we can make it even better as well as saving council taxpayers’ money, so I urge everyone to read the following, understand it and comment on it."

The review aims to look at improving the service while at the same time making at least £250,000 worth of efficiency savings from the overall budget.

The first stages of the review have taken place by consulting with staff and councillors to set out the future vision of the public Library Service in Worcestershire. The recommendations so far are the following:

• Encourage reading throughout all age groups
• Support learning and educational needs of individuals
• Develop computer skills

The report will also focus on the following four key groups:

1. People from a disadvantaged background
2. Older people
3. Children and their parents
4. Young adults and teenagers

The review looks into consulting with public and other stakeholders on the following four recommendations:

1. New ways of working for libraries
2. Revisiting mobile routes
3. Internet use
4. Community consultation panels
