Young Carers
Who are Young Carers? – They are children and young people under
18 who help to look after someone who is ill, has a disability, a mental health problem or a drug or
alcohol problem.
Young Carers do lots of things such as cooking meals, shopping, housework, helping
someone to the toilet or to get up in the morning, looking after brothers and sisters and being an extra
pair of hands.
Caring may bring with it –
- educational problems – missing school
- social isolation – no time to spend with friends
- emotional problems
- physical health problems
- stress and mental health problems
Young carers may need –
- someone to talk to
- someone to listen to them
- understanding
- recognition for what they do
- time to be themselves
- time to feel and be ill
- not to feel alone
- time for homework or further education
- hopes and plans for the future
