EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY TEAM

Who are we?

Educational Psychologists are largely employed by Local Authorities (LAs).  They work with children from birth to 19 years, in many different settings – home, nursery, primary and secondary schools, special schools or units, social care provisions, and hospitals.  In the course of their work they regularly liaise with other professionals within Health and children's services.

To become registered as a Chartered Educational Psychologist in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, it was normally necessary to complete:

  • An appropriate accredited qualification in Psychology (1-4 years)
  • A teaching qualification (i.e. PGCE, a PGCE Conversion, B.Ed) (1-3 years)
  • Teaching experience with children and young adults up to the age of 19 years (2 years)
  • An accredited postgraduate training course in Educational Psychology (1 year)
  • Supervised experience as an Educational Psychologist (1 year).

However, in 2009 the first graduates of the new 3 year doctorate training will be completing their courses. Entry to  these course requires a good honours degree in psychology and 2 years relevant experience working with children and young people. The 3 year course involves 1 year largely university based, then increasing amounts of time working in LAs before completion of a thesis.
