Here are some ways you can make a difference, before you even go shopping:
- Try to plan your meals for the days ahead and make a list before you go shopping. So you don’t end up buying things you don’t need – and you’ll save yourself time.
- When buying household cleaners, buy a refill rather than a complete container.
- Take your own shopping bag or other durable container with you rather than use supermarket carrier bags.
- Buy milk in returnable glass bottles if you can.

- If you’re going to a supermarket with a recycling area, remember to take your bottles, cans, paper and other items for recycling with you and save a journey.
- Don’t buy over-packaged goods – remember who’s paying for all that extra plastic and cardboard that does nothing for the product inside.

- Avoid buying pre-packed vegetables. Don't forget, you're paying for the packaging as well as the food item.
- Wherever possible buy goods in larger containers or in bulk and avoid multi-packs of small containers.
- Use razor blades or an electric razor rather than complete disposable razors.
- Refuse plastic or paper bags in shops if you don't need them.

- Buy detergent concentrates. More washing powders and other detergents are now available, but be careful to measure the amount stated on the pack, as a little goes a long way.
