Features

Tree Carving Sculpture

A 16m high, twin stemmed Weymouth Pine (Pinus strobus), approximately 70 years old was struck by lightning causing two-thirds of the tree to die-back.  Rather than lose the tree altogether, it was decided to turn the tree into a sculpture.

Mr. Tom Harvey, a sculptor from Tewkesbury was commissioned to undertake this task and pupils from Chawson First, St. Peter's First and Dodderhill School were involved in this project. Workshops were held where the children made clay models of their ideas and the most popular idea was the man in a diving position.  The three schools also entered a competition to name the sculpture and a pupil from the Chawson First School was awarded with a WH Smith book voucher as first prize for the winning name "Spa Man".

It took a week of Tom's creativity to complete the sculpture and a ceremony took place on Wednesday, 30 January 2008 when Councillor Don Lawley unveiled "Spa Man".
