The National Land Information Service (NLIS) is a joint initiative between Central and Local Government to provide an online one-stop-shop, delivering land and property related information that is actually held by many different organisations. Initially it is concentrating on providing a service to the conveyancing community, in order to speed up and simplify the process of buying or selling property. This allows all searches to be carried out via the Internet, and includes faster and more accurate property identification through the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG), a definitive index of land and property.
The Central Local Information Age Government Concordat was signed between Local and Central Government on 29 July 1999, and commits Local Government to play its part in the Government's programme to achieve a range of improvements to services. These are set out in the White Paper Modernising Government presented in March 1999 including the realisation of "Joined-up Government" to provide for full electronic service provision by 2008. Central Government's progress towards these aims was such that on 30 March 2000 the deadline was brought forward to 2005.
