Refuse and Recycling in Wychavon

Bank Holiday Collections

No refuse collections are effected by the May Bank holidays. Please put your refuse out on the normal day of your collection, this include domestic refuse, commercial refuse, recycling and garden waste.

Recycling Services

We are committed to providing recycling services and increasing our recycling rate to meet Government targets.

We provide over 70 recycling bank sites throughout the District where you can take newspapers and glass bottles and jars.  To find your nearest site and to see the range of materials accepted please see the Recycling Centres list.

Welcome to Wheelie Bins

Why are we changing the service?

We’re doing this so we can:

  • Give 100% of homes a recycling collection service
  • Increase recycling and reduce waste going to landfill
  • Avoid increasing landfill costs and the need for more landfills
  • Reduce problems with sack collection e.g. littering from ripped sacks and crew injuries

Collections:

  • Have a look at the calendar, in your pack or click here, for further information on which bin to put out which week.
  • To help you keep track of your bin, it would be great if you could put your house name or number on the stickers in this pack and stick them on the back of your bins.
  • Bins need to be out by 7am on the day of collection at the front edge of your property.
  • When bins are put out please make sure the lid is closed and all the waste or recycling is in the bins. We can’t take any waste that is not in the bins.

How will the new collection work?

Please note that none of our bins are fitted with microchips.

Under the new system residents will receive the following collections:

Week 1 - recycling– green wheelie bin (1100 mm high, 580 mm wide, 740 mm deep)

  • This wheelie bin is for all your recyclable waste.
  • Paper, cans, plastics and glass.
  • No more sorting – just put it in clean and loose. This bin replaces your clear and purple sacks and the glass box.

See below for list of items that can be recycled in your green bin:

  • Newspapers
  • Junk mail (including envelopes with see-through windows)
  • Bank statements and bills - These can be shredded first to ensure details are confidential
  • light weight card such as cereal packets - please flatten them

  • All glass bottles
  • All glass jars
  • NO TEXTILES / CLOTHING thanks

Week 2 - non-recycling – grey wheelie bin (1070 mm high, 480 mm wide, 730 mm deep)

  • This wheelie bin is for what’s left over after you’ve recycled everything you can.
  • This bin replaces black sacks.
  • Hopefully this bin will have the least in.
  • Remember anything that goes in here goes straight to landfill.
  • No garden waste, liquids or hot ashes

Each Week: A kitchen waste bin (353mm high, 295 mm wide, 340 mm deep)

  • This bin is for all your food waste such as peelings and leftovers. It has a lockable lid and can be put out each week along with the grey bin and the green bin.
  • Householders will also receive a small caddie (215 mm high, 275 mm wide, 205 mm deep - maximum dimensions) for use in the kitchen to help collect up the food waste ready for transfer to the kitchen waste bin.

During consultation residents told us that they wanted a weekly food waste collection due to worries over smells and flies in the summer. However, due to the significant cost of composting the food waste we can only compost food waste on the week that we collect your recycling green bin in a specialist vehicle. The week your non-recycling grey bin is collected the same vehicle will take your food waste and it will be sent to landfill, as currently happens.

Alternative service arrangements

You may need to get in touch with us if any of the issues mentioned below apply to you.

Exemptions to the wheelie bin collection

There will be a small number of properties that will be exempt from using wheelie bins. These properties will have the same items collected but with sacks for recycling and refuse, a box for glass and a food waste bin.

Exemptions may apply if a property has any of the following:

For exempt properties the following collections will be made:

Week 1 - Refuse Sacks (maximum of 2), Clear Recycling Sacks (No limit), Food Waste Bin and Glass Box

  • Clear sacks are for paper, cans and plastic bottles
  • The glass box is for all your glass

Week 2 - Refuse Sacks (maximum of 2) and Food Waste Bin

  • Only Wychavon District Council refuse sacks will be taken
  • Maximum of 2 sacks per week
