Wychavon District Council Sports Recognition Awards 2006

The Wychavon Sports Recognition Awards took place at the Civic Centre in Pershore on the 1st February 2007

Winners

Senior Sports Personality of the Year (collected by Trevor Ridings)

Mark Stephens – Bredon Star U17 RFC
Mark took over the coaching of the Bredon Star U15 team 2 years ago when the team was near collapse. They had not won a game for 2 season and with Marks skill as a coach and dedication to the team they now have a squad of 22 and this year won their divisional league. He coaches them twice a week and the despondent players from two years ago are now confident and committed rugby players.

Coach of the Year

Trevor Ridings – Pershore Cricket Club
Trevor gives an enormous amount of time to Pershore Cricket Club coaching both Ladies, Mens and Junior sides for the Club in and out of the season. He also coaches a Worcestershire Junior side in order to develop cricket not just at club level but at county level as well.

Junior Sports Personality of the Year - Boy

Zac Turley – Ombersley Cricket Club
Zac has been a member of Ombersley Cricket Club since he was 8 and a constant member of the Worcester County team at both under 10 and under 11 age groups and has again been selected for this years under 12’s as a batsman. At club level he managed not to lose his wicket once in competition throughout the season and at county level he recorded a top score of 113 being the highest score at U11’s ever! He is a committed team member and determined individual and this is why he has won the award.

Junior Sports Personality of the Year - Girl

Ayesha Gardiner – Worcester Swimming Club and Cheltenham Athletics Club
Ayesha is a very talented swimmer but is also gifted in a number of other sports. She trains 3 times a week at Worcester Swimming Club and once a week at Cheltenham Athletics Club. She has come first in several disciplines in Evesham District galas and Worcester galas and has also achieved placings in county cross country competitions. She moved to Worcester swimming club a few months ago and has fitted in easily becoming an integral part of a successful U11’s girls team.

Volunteer of the Year

Paul Edwards – Droitwich RFC
Paul is one of the most dedicated volunteers in the area. As well as Chairman of the minis and juniors section, he holds the position of coaching co-ordinator, North Midlands Representative and U16’s coach.

He is also very involved in coaching in the local community. Over the past year he has delivered over 40 training session to schools in the local area, free of charge to encourage more young players down to the club. He is also involved heavily in the admin and organisational side of the club, working closely with partners such as WDC in order to develop the sport of rugby.

Paul deserves this award for his devotion to the club and to the sport with enthusiasm as great as it was in the beginning.

Club of the Year

Droitwich Rugby Club Minis and Juniors Section
The mini and junior section at Droitwich RFC has one of the biggest membership lists in the North Midlands, regularly attracting over 250 players and numbers are still growing. The section has over 30 coaches and supports volunteers as well. They have an active player development programme which encourages all players to take an active role in the club and community.

Disabled_Sports_Personality of the Year

Wayne Panting – Evesham District Disabled Angling Club
Over the years Wayne has won nearly every trophy in the club and this has been down to his hard work and determination. He has recently won a disabled championship, fishing with both disabled and able bodied anglers. He has also just gainde sponsorship from ‘Champion Baits’

Outstanding Contribution

Barbara Pallister – Ombersley and Doverdale Tennis Club
In the late 1980’s Barbara Pallister asked the Parish council if a tennis club in Ombersley would be a good idea. Once land was acquired and grants had been approved they were off! Over 14 years as chairman of the club she has energetically promoted the development of the club and now the club has 3 floodlit courts, a practice wall and the original club house has been modernised and extended. She involves herself in all aspects of the club from the running of the grounds, coaching, leagues and organises sessions and club tournaments. For her enthusiasm and love of the club and all she has done for it we have given her this award.

Junior Team of the Year

Pershore Town U10’s A Team
They have been in the league for 4 seasons and during this time they have only lost one match. Last season they did the double winning the league and cup match and are definitely on form to do the same again. Their hard work and commitment has seen the boys win many tournaments and because of their attitudes and talent in the game we have awarded them Junior Team of the Year.
