The LGC Awards recognise excellence in councils who take their work beyond the normal level of service provision, and Wychavon was previously shortlisted to compete as one of five Councils vying for the coveted title.

Councillor Martin Jennings, Former Leader of the District Council added: "Councils throughout the country enter these awards, so to receive this recognition in the ‘Council of the Year’ category is a fantastic achievement, and a credit to all the hard working staff at Wychavon.”

The event was hosted by Rory Bremner, and for the first time ever in its history the award was presented jointly this year, with Wychavon District Council and High Peak Borough Council both claiming the top honour.

On the back of one of the lowest Council Tax rates in the country, Wychavon’s notable achievements and contributing factors for its success include:

• Investing its own money in building a hospital and health centre so as not to lose local facilities.
• Achieving the first - and still only – double excellent inspection score in district housing services.
• Scoring top marks from the Audit Commission for value for money and use of resources.
• Winning the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy award for communicating to residents what they get for their Council Tax.
• Award winning loos that are in the top five in the country.
