Legionnaires' disease is a pneumonia type bacterial infection caused by breathing in droplets from a contaminated water source. All people can be affected but it is mainly those over 50 years of age, and usually more men than women.
In England, around 200 cases are reported each year, however half of these are caught abroad. Most cases are isolated incidents but outbreaks can occur.
