The Way We Work at Wychavon

Wychavon District Council has a progressive approach to service management and is involved in a number of joint working initiatives. For more information about what we have planned for the future, see our Our Promises and Priorities  (203.80 KB).

The Council values quality services, and in addition to charter marks for our "One Stop Shops" we have achieved Investors in People, and are piloting an ISO 9002 accreditation programme. In 1997/98 Wychavon had the highest rate of Council Tax collection in the country, and we continue to participate actively in benchmarking networks to assess our performance standards across the Council.

The Council also maintains a national profile, with senior members of staff involved with Employers Organisation initiatives and even in advising select committees at the House of Commons.

Management Structure

The Managing Director meets fortnightly with the Senior Management Team (Directors, Service Unit Managers). Managers are expected to take a high level of responsibility both for managing their own work areas and by being involved in and leading corporate initiatives eg community safety, anti-poverty. The Council aims to communicate with and involve staff, and Investors in People is being used to drive this forward, through appraisal systems, team briefing and building on our service planning programme. There is also a staff magazine (ASPIRE), regular union consultation, and the intranet.

Political Structure

Wychavon District Council succeeded five previous authorities (Droitwich Borough Council, Droitwich Rural District Council, Evesham Borough Council, Evesham Rural District Council and Pershore Rural District Council) on the reorganisation of local government in April 1974. The Council forms one of six District Councils in the County of Worcestershire.  It is comprised of 45 members elected from 32 Wards.  The current Council was elected in May 2003 and its present political composition is as follows:-

County Council

County Council functions are run from County Hall in Worcester and include responsibility for education, social services, highways, countryside management and planning.  The County Council sets the overall strategic framework in which the Districts operate.  It is the responsibility of each District to consider detailed policies for their area.
