Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE)
ACRE is a national charity whose purpose is to support sustainable rural community development. Arts Council England
Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts. Their aim is to place the arts at the heart of national life and it supports a wide range musical genres both contemporary and classical. Between 2003 and 2006 they plan to invest £2 billion of public funds in the arts in England, including funding from the National Lottery.

British Beer and Pub Association
The BBPA was originally founded in 1904 as a result of the amalgamation of the Country Brewers’ Society, the London Brewers’ Society and the Burton Brewers’ Society. Its main aim is to promote the interest of the brewing trade. The BBPA was originally named the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association.

CM (formerly Community Music)
CM works as an alternative to mainstream provision by targeting young people who do not have the opportunity to learn, and musicians who do not have recognised qualifications. There is a constant stream of new music coming from students, tutors and professionals associated with CM.

The Gambling Commission

The Gambling Commission was set up under the Gambling Act 2005 andwas formally established in October 2005.
It has taken over the role previously played by the Gaming Board for Great Britain in regulating casinos, bingo, gaming machines and lotteries.

The Commission also has responsibility for the regulation of betting and remote gambling, as well as helping to protect children and vulnerable people from being harmed or exploited by gambling. The Commission is also responsible for advising local and central government on issues related to gambling.

Generator – Popular Music Development Agency [For NE England LAs only?]
Generator, based in Newcastle Upon Tyne is the North’s popular music development agency. It was set up as a voluntary organisation in the early 1990’s with the aim of developing a healthier and more sustainable popular music industry in the North East and Cumbria. In particular, it seeks to help music business as well as musicians and songwriters of all ages to develop their careers and music through the provision of ongoing support, advice, events/activities, and educational work. Over the last three years has now expanded throughout England offering networking opportunities for those wishing to increase their skills in the grass roots music industry and producing a national promoter development scheme for the Arts Council.

The LGA was formed in 1997 and represents the local authorities of England and Wales – a total of just under 500 authorities. The LGA exists to promote better local government. Musicians’ Union (MU)
The MU was founded over 100 years ago in 1893, and has a history of service to musicians of all types. It aims to give musicians a better service and a democratic organization. National Campaign for the Arts (NCA)
The NCA is the only independent lobbying organisation that represents all the arts. The campaign is funded entirely by its members to ensure its independence. It gives a voice for the arts. The membership of the campaign includes nearly five hundred organisations. These include major theatre, opera and dance companies, national visual arts and museums organizations, writers’ groups, local authorities, dance and drama schools, film and TV companies, unions, arts centers, local galleries and small scale companies.

Making Music, the National Federation of Music Societies
Making Music is the umbrella group representing amateur musical organisations. Performing Right Society Ltd (PRS)
PRS collects licence fees for the public performance (and broadcasting) of copyright musical works. It distributes these royalties to its members – writers and publishers of music – and to affiliated societies worldwide. Applicants planning on any kind of music use at their premises must also apply separately to PRS for its music licence by virtue of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (not the Licensing Act 2003).

Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL)
Phonographic Performance Ltd is the UK collecting society for record companies and performers. PPL licenses radio stations, TV stations and other broadcasters who use sound recordings in their sound transmissions. PPL also licenses clubs, shops, pubs, restaurants and other music users who play sound recordings in public. Applicants who plan to use sound recordings of music at their premises must also apply separately to PPL for its licence by virtue of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (not the Licensing Act 2003).
