Sunday Trading

In Law, Sunday is no longer "special." There is some control to protect small shops and rights of shop workers who don't want to work on Sundays and controls are possible on early morning deliveries.

Retailers with more than 280sq.metres floor space are limited to six hours opening on a Sunday, which can be between 10a.m. and 6p.m. Opening hours must be clearly displayed.

There isn't a requirement for large stores to register with us (Regulatory Reform (Sunday Trading) Order 2004) but if we get proof that they are trading outside of their chosen 6 hour period, or if they trade on Easter Sunday or Christmas day (if it is a Sunday), or abuse worker's rights then we can take them to court.

Anyone suffering nuisance due to noise, smells etc due to operation of a commercial premises should contact the Environmental Protection team to discuss the remedies available.
