Car Sharing Initiatives

Car Sharing Initiatives

Car Sharing is when two or more people share a car and travel together.

Why Car Share on the School Run?

  • It reduces the number of cars on the roads around the school, which can improve safety in the area.
  • It reduces the number of cars trying to find somewhere to park.
  • It can be fun for children from different families to travel together.
  • It could save valuable time for parents who would otherwise always drive at the beginning and end of the day.
  • It saves money! – reducing fuel costs and wear and tear on the vehicle.

How it Works

  • Schools can send a letter to parents (and/or governors and staff) asking if they would like to take part in the scheme.
  • Those who are interested in participating and who live nearby or en route can be put in touch with each other.
  • Car Sharers can choose which trips they want to do; alternate between driving and being a passenger, do the morning and/or afternoon run and decide which days.

Remember, it doesn't have to be every day, just once a week could cut the numbers of cars on the road at peak times by one fifth!

N.B. Suitable child seats must be fitted for all children travelling in a car

Staff can take part too!  Posters can be put up in the staff room inviting them to state their journey details so they can contact each other when it suits them.

Schools may also like to consider setting up a database as part of an ICT project or starting a car share initiative as part of a wider environmental/sustainability project.

Schools and individuals can sign up to the County Council's car share database at:
